In short, he was humble. Yet this humble man has been able to dare to “disturb the universe” of psychoanalytic positivism and certainty with ideas that issue from the vast sweep of his polymath, autodidact erudition and remarkable imaginative conjectures. These ideas now stand the test of time as worthy rational conjectures and arguably constitute perhaps the greatest paradigm shift in psychoanalysis to date. I pay him the highest compliment when I suggest that he was a “Yeshivabucher activist”, a “messiah–genius”, a veritable Prometheus, the “doyen of uncertainty”, and the “navigator extraordinaire of the deep and formless infinite”.
He interpreted frequently and often at length. Yet he was always “Kleinian”—but in his own way. I never read any of Bion’s works while I was in analysis with him and was therefore surprised later when I read his concept of “abandoning memory and desire”. He spoke and interpreted in an active and highly engaged manner; consequently, I don’t know when he found the time to “abandon memory and desire”. I recall, however, that like a scout, he doggedly tracked the sequence of my free associations. I shall soon share with you some of what he said to me, including his first interpretation to me on my first day of analysis with him.
5 Others spread the rumour that he had become psychotic during his stay there, and they forged a constant conjunction between “California and Bion’s psychosis”—a calumny that spread to include those who had been analysed by him in Los Angeles (personal communication, anonymous London post-Kleinian analyst, 2004). He was certainly not psychotic when my colleagues and I knew him here in Los Angeles and had entered analysis with him, but he did suffer two episodes of vaso-vagal syncope while he was here, according to Francesca Bion (personal communication, 2007).
