By grim coincidence, just as official military circles were at last giving serious attention to airships, Zeppelin’s LZ2 was wrecked in mid-January on its only flight. The Count briefly considered abandoning his whole venture, offering the fruits of his entire enterprise for sale to the War Ministry.

Now Berg threw in his full support with Zeppelin and the two negotiated rights settlements with Schwarz’s heirs. 9 The events that followed were largely non-political. Nevertheless, the Count still had to underwrite more than half of the company. He transferred his activities to Manzell, near Friedrichshafen, where the King had supplied lake-front property for construction facilities.
